Dyslexia: our expertise

Dyslexia: our expertiseTribal has a strong track record in developing e-learning products for people who have basic skills needs and learning difficulties. Our team includes national experts in dyslexia learning, and we specialise in training tutors in the pedagogical approaches to the teaching of dyslexia. Here is an overview of some of the work we have done in this area:

Dealing with dyslexia in adults

A large scale national project for the Department of Education and Skills (DfES) and the National Learning and Skills Council. Tribal is working closely with the University of London and other partners to target non-specialist teachers and support staff. It builds on the Framework for Understanding Dyslexia with a view to improving teaching and learning.

Development of materials for assessing dyslexia support

Our Ellesmere office (formally known as BE Consultancy) has particular expertise in this field. As part of a larger national project, we developed dyslexia diagnostic materials aimed at learners at Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3, Level 1 and Level 2. A full tutor pack was created, with the support of the Institute of Education, the Dyslexia Institute, the Adult Dyslexia Organisation, Sheffield University, the British Dyslexia Association, the London Language and Literacy Unit and other experts in the field.

Dealing with basic skills

Tribal developed a training module on dealing with literacy, numeracy and dyslexia as part of a component for a degree programme in the Midlands working with prison, probation and education staff at The University of Wolverhampton. Many programmes were run throughout the region over several years between 1988 and 1994.

Special training for offenders in prison and probation (STOPP)

A three-year EU funded project that led by Shropshire Probation Service with partners in Dublin Prison Service and CEIS in Italy (a voluntary organisation in Italy dealing with ex offenders in the community). Following the project’s huge success, the STOPP team went on to train 2,500 probation staff in various regions of England and Wales in awareness raising and initial assessment in literacy, numeracy and dyslexia.

Longitudinal study in the states of Jersey 1998 – 2003

A qualitative analysis and quantitative survey of offenders which analysed their feelings and opinions about their offending behaviour and the impact of literacy, numeracy and dyslexia problems on it. The outcome of the project was a set of recommendations forming part of the Skills for Life strategy in the states of Jersey.
