Altsolem House

What is the Altsolem House?

ImageA place for learning and sharing

The Altsolem House is a place full of ideas for making and using e-learning and m-learning materials to enhance your language teaching.
  • Find out how to use the tools to create activities and courses, and give them a try. There are lots of examples for you to look at to help you get started.
  • When you’re ready, invite students to your courses and see how they progress.
  • Chat with other colleagues about what interests or intrigues you.
  • Chat with your students to keep them on track and let them know how they’re doing.
The House is accessible in English, German, Bulgarian, Latvian, Estonian, Spanish and Italian.

The result of three years’ work

Under the EU Leonardo da Vinci ‘Altsolem’ project, we set out in 2005 to develop easy-to-use, flexible, authorable, and inexpensive e-learning and m-learning software for language training. This resulted in the creation of the Altsolem House. In the follow-up project, called ‘Illimited’ (2007–2009), we are focusing on adding Estonian and Spanish language versions, increasing the number of tools, improving user-friendliness, training people how to best make use of it, and spreading information about it.

Who is it for?

The Altsolem House will be of interest for you if:
  • you want to find information, ideas, and discussions on the use of ICT in language learning
  • you want to try out the set of Altsolem tools, including forum discussions, chats, quizzes, podcast maker, and much more
  • you need a place to develop and host an e-learning or blended learning course
  •  you are an organisation or association working in the area of language training and need a place to share information and discuss ideas.

Technical stuff

The Atsolem House is based on the course management system Moodle. The fact that Moodle is open source software gave us the inexpensive solution we were looking for and allowed us to make adaptations to the product according to our needs. Moodle is extremely popular among teaching organisations around the world – this gives the Altsolem House an appropriate setting.
The Illimited project has been funded with support from the European Commission.
