NEET stands for ‘not in education, employment or training’. This is a situation that many young people can find themselves in between the ages of 16 and 18, and which can have serious implications for their later employability, health and happiness if not addressed. All English local authorities have been set the challenging target of reducing the proportion of NEET youngsters by 2% by 2010. Similar targets, and funding, are in place in Scotland.
