English in Action was the first ESOL package specifically developed to support the ESOL Adult Core Curriculum. It
combines ICT-based learning resources with extensive use of video to provide around 330 hours of total learning.
These realistic video scenarios, in authentic settings, reflect the language of everyday life in the UK. With the software’s ability to record, save and replay, and numerous non-ICT-based activities, English in Action gives ESOL learners the best possible opportunity to practise their speaking and listening skills for a variety of tasks.
Who is it for?
The suite now includes titles that map to all levels of the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum, from Entry 1 to Level 2.
English in Action meets the needs of ESOL learners in many contexts. These include adult and community education; FE colleges; family-based programmes; the workplace and prisons. The suite is also suitable for learners in post-14 school provision who need English language skills support.
How does it work?
Written by experienced ESOL tutors, the English in Action materials help learners to engage with the language they’ll encounter in real life. Examples include: shopping, college, the doctor’s, local officialdom, and language found in professional and technical workplaces.
All the modules can be used for selfstudy, classroom work or as the basis of group activity, and are ideal for blended learning. Each is divided into three sections, introduced by a short video which is set in an appropriate context. The use of authentic characters facilitates the learner’s engagement in setting and language.
Learners are able to play and replay the video as required. For some activities, a recording tool is available so that learners can practise speaking skills and use their recordings as evidence towards qualifications. The video sections are followed by a set of activities which exploit and develop the language skills that have been demonstrated, including grammar exercises appropriate to level.
“It’s a really useful resource . . . the authentic video material is great for helping them get used to the sounds of English.”
Joanna Fayram, head of ESOL,

“You don’t miss anything because you have control. It helps you learn about the way of life in Britain and helps you to be independent. ”
