Poor basic skills not only cost businesses hundreds of thousands of pounds in reduced productivity, but they also contribute to profound social disadvantage and exclusion for the individual.
The DfES White Paper Skills: Getting on in business, getting on at work (March 2005) proposes putting employers’ needs centre stage in the design and delivery of training. Embedding language, literacy and numeracy in vocational learning is therefore now a key issue for employers, educators and learners.
